The stories we repeatedly tell ourselves become true over time
When I look back on my childhood, there are stories that I can recite with no problem. What I can’t say for certain is whether or not I remember the actual event itself or if I remember the story I was told about said event.
In an example where I remember the story about an event, it feels like I was actually there. It feels like I remember that event itself.
We had 5 or 6 ducks when I was little. Thinking back on where I lived and estimating when this was, I’d say I was about 3 years old (I’m 29 now). I remember the day my Dad let the little ducks go (they were wild, not domestic). They were able to fly away on their own and I vividly remember watching him launch the ducks up maybe 3 feet above his head to launch them into their new lives. This one, I’m fairly certain I remember the actual event happening. I’m fairly certain I’m remembering seeing my Dad toss the little suckers up and on their way.
Other times, I can’t decipher whether I’m remembering the event, activity, or whatever.
If we are able to remember stories in such a way that make it feel like we remember the actual thing, why wouldn’t we be able to do this going forward in our lives? I mean, why wouldn’t we be able to harness this almost magic-like ability and use it to our advantage.
Some folks talk about being able to manifest the things we want in life. And I believe there’s merit to this for the simple reason that we are able to remember events in our lives AS IF we actually remember them instead of remembering the stories we were told about them.
If we only remember those stories, we’re only going off of the feelings those stories gave us. We’re not going off the feelings of the actual event because we simply don’t remember it happening. Instead, again, we remember the stories we were told.
Bear with me. I know it might sound like I’m going in circles.
Our brains are far more powerful than any of us even realize. Any of us. They’re almost magical.
I can’t go into this in great length simply because I’m not equipped to do so… if you want a taste of what I mean, I highly, HIGHLY recommend reading this book.
If we’re able to FEEL like we remember an actual even (but only really remember the stories about it), we should be able to gear our minds towards the goals, dreams, and ambitions we really want to go after.
In order to accomplish anything—literally anything—we need a target. Even the most expensive, most powerful, and most technologically advanced ballistic missiles need a target. It doesn’t matter who you are or what you are, you need a target. You need a goal. You need a North Star.
Instead of hoping to reach any of these goals or accomplish anything, try to act AS IF you’re already there.
You want to make $500k a year? Great. Act as if you’re already there. It’s not a slimy “fake it til ya make it” type deal. It’s more of having that confidence in yourself as if you’re already there.
Make yourself FEEL like you’re already there. And everything you do in your days/weeks/months will work towards that goal.
We all remember things in our childhood as if we were actually there. Instead, what we really remember is what we were told about it. We’ve replayed those stories so much in our heads that we’ve convinced ourselves that we remember actually being there. Use this power and this ability to your advantage.
The stories we repeatedly tell ourselves become true over time.
If you woke up and repeated the story of your achieving your goal every single day in great, vivid detail, it’ll come true over time.
You’re not at your goal today. That’s ok. We’re all gunning towards something. Try to make yourself feel AS IF you’ve already accomplished it. See yourself in that place where you’re knocking down goal after goal with all the momentum in the world.
Our brains… our minds are so powerful. And few people actually realize it. Honestly, I barely realize it.
This article is a word vomit about this topic. I’ve wanted to get something out there that talked about this in more detail, but I’ve put it off for months because I know I can’t explain it the way I need to in order for you to grasp everything I’m saying. If you’re confused, it’s on me. Not you.
I hope there was something here that made you think a little differently today. I hope it was something positive. Seriously though, check out that link above to the book that made me think differently about it. I promise… I promise you won’t regret it. I had so many “aha” moments reading it. And even more the second time through.
The stories we repeatedly tell ourselves become true over time.
This is true.
Make it work for YOU. ♥️
