I’m building a course

I’m absolutely surrounded by people suggesting I build a course and create optionality for myself.

To be honest, I’m not even 100% sure I know what optionality means. But, given the context, I think it’s ultimately a nice way of taking control of your life.

My goal is to get people to become customers of my software company.

Oh yeah btw, I’m building a software company.

It’s white-labeled software, but it’s software at the end of the day.

But I’m building a course that helps me sell this software. I am building the thing (my course) that sells the thing (the software). If I just sell this software by itself, people will churn way more often. And people don’t inherently like monthly subscriptions, so it’s difficult to ask or sell someone on doing that without them getting cold feet and peacing out 30 days later.

Plus, I can get some additional revenue in the door by selling this course. Monthly recurring revenue is the dream, but it’ll be more of a slow grind at first and the revenue from the course(s) will provide a fun little boost.

I’ll get more into what this type of software is all about sometime down the road, but I just wanted to do a quick little braindump about this course. I feel like I have some things that need to be flushed out, and writing is a good way for me to do that. Even if it’s just spewing words out into the void.

With this course, I’m going to teach people how my mom went from basically 0 to 100 with her cleaning business. I’ll talk about how she started, what she was doing, and where she is now. (She acquired a large residential cleaning company about 5 years after starting her own cleaning business.)

I helped her with her lead + client generation through digital marketing. And that’s what my course is going to be about, specifically. How to generate leads, estimate requests, and clients. I feel like a fraud for wanting to sell something like this because I don’t feel like I deserve it (just some of my own insecurities). But I really do think it’ll help some good folks out there. 🙂

A lot of people are starting their own cleaning companies right now they all need leads and estimate requests. I know how to get them those. Easily.

I’ve never created a course before, and I have no idea how this is gonna go. But I have to try. I have to start building something for myself or something that I control. I don’t want to be susceptible to another person’s decisions. I can’t have a scenario where the rug could be pulled out from under me without warning. I refuse to let myself be in that position.

I started building yesterday.

Honestly, it’s a complete mess right now because I have no idea what I’m doing, but everyone has their Day 1.

Day 1s are the most difficult because most people won’t ever just get started. I started but now I gotta finish. I’m going to make mistakes. It’s going to be ugly at first. I’m going to flop along the way too. All of that’s ok. All of that is necessary to the process. I just need to make sure I stay on track and keep aiming towards my goal.

Without putting a ton of thought into it, my initial goal is 100 users within the first 12 months. Completely bootstrapped. It feels like a tiny goal and one where I will soon look back and say “wow, I wish I realized sooner that my goal was way too small”. But I need smaller goals. I’m realizing that’s what I thrive on. Having many smaller goals that lead up to the main goal is how I best operate.

If you’re reading this and also building something — anything—please reach out. Comment below, DM me on Twitter, or shoot me an email.

I’d love to see what it is you’re building and how things are going for you. People like us who are building something of our own don’t always have the support system they need. Sometimes we need a little outside motivation to give us the extra push. Just having someone—even a stranger—cheering you on makes a world of difference. And, if you’re building something right now, I’d love to be that for you. I love seeing what others are building and seeing what they’re up to. 🙂
